Schweitzer-Mauduit International, Inc. (Schweitzer-Mauduit) is a diversified producer of premium specialty papers and the worlds largest supplier of fine papers to the tobacco industry. Schweitzer-Mauduit conducts business in over 90 countries and employs approximately 3,600 people worldwide, with operations in the United States, France, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines and Canada and with a joint venture under construction in China.
Schweitzer-Mauduit became an independent public company on December 1, 1995 with the spin-off by Kimberly-Clark Corporation of its United States, French and Canadian operations that produced tobacco-related products. Schweitzer-Mauduit is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SWM.
Schweitzer-Mauduits manufacturing facilities have a long history of producing paper dating back to 1545. The Companys domestic mills led the development of the North American tobacco-related papers manufacturing industry, which was originated by Peter J. Schweitzer, Inc. that began as an importer of cigarette papers from France in 1908. The manufacturing facilities include:

Papeteries de Malaucène, located near Avignon in Provence, France began operations in 1520 and has manufactured paper continuously since 1545. Papeteries de Malaucène now ranks as a world leader in the production of perforated tipping and cigarette papers.

The Lee group of mills, located in western Massachusetts, is comprised of four mill sites: the Eagle Mill, established in 1806; the Columbia Mill, established in 1827; the Niagara Mill, established in 1903; and the Greylock mill, established in 1966.

Papeteries de Mauduit, located in Quimperlè, Brittany in western France began as a producer of fine writing papers in 1827 and was converted to the manufacture of cigarette papers in 1855. The mill currently includes eight cigarette paper machines, of which two are high speed, and three long fiber machines. Papeteries de Mauduit has produced cigarette paper for nearly 150 years and today ranks as the worlds largest cigarette paper mill.

The Ancram mill, located in upstate New York, began operations in 1743 as an iron works and helped create a chain-link blockade of the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War. The mill was re-opened as a paper mill in 1854 and today the mill is the heart of Schweitzer-Mauduits reconstituted tobacco wrapper and binder business.

The Spotswood mill, located in north-central New Jersey began operations in 1929 producing reformed leather sheets from scrap leather. The Spotswood mill began producing cigarette papers on two paper machines in 1941 and over the next 60 years, installed four additional cigarette paper machines and the first commercial-scale reconstituted tobacco leaf machine. The Spotswood mill now produces both conventional cigarette paper and patented lower ignition propensity cigarette paper.

Le Tabac Reconstitué (now LTR Industries), located in Spay, a suburb of LeMans, in north-central France, is the worlds largest independent producer of reconstituted tobacco leaf products. LTR Industries is owned jointly, with Schweitzer-Mauduit owning 72 percent and SEITA, formerly the French tobacco monopoly, owning 28 percent. A third reconstituted tobacco leaf production line was added in 2003.

Schweitzer-Mauduit became an independent public company as the result of a tax-free spin-off by Kimberly-Clark Corporation to its shareholders.
Schweitzer-Mauduits manufacturing facilities had their origins in the Schweitzer family business, which was established as Peter J. Schweitzer, Inc. in New Jersey in 1908 to import cigarette papers from France. The Schweitzer family business was acquired by the Kimberly-Clark Corporation in 1957.
The manufacturing facilities acquired by Schweitzer-Mauduit in the spin-off included:
- Three manufacturing facilities in the United States Lee Massachusetts, Ancram New York and Spotswood New Jersey
- Three manufacturing facilities in France Papeteries de Mauduit, Papeteries de Malaucene and a 72 percent interest in LTR Industries
- Flax fiber processing operations in Canada and France (located on the site of LTR Industries).

Schweitzer-Mauduit acquired Companhia Industrial de Papel Pirahy (now Schweitzer-Mauduit do Brasil), located near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Schweitzer-Mauduit do Brasil began operations as a cigarette paper producer in 1927 and is the largest supplier of tobacco-related papers in South America. Schweitzer-Mauduit do Brasil also produces printing, writing and packaging papers.
Schweitzer-Mauduit acquired Ingefico, S.A. (now Papeteries de Saint-Girons), located in southwestern France. Papeteries de Saint-Girons began operations as a cigarette paper producer in 1900 and manufactures a broad range of tobacco-related and other papers as well as textile fiber pulp.

A third reconstituted tobacco leaf production line was constructed at the LTR Industries S.A. mill in Spay, France. The new production line, costing approximately $79 million, provides approximately 33,000 metric tons per year of additional capacity, increasing total production capacity of the Spay mill to approximately 80,000 metric tons per year, dependent upon the mix of products produced. The new production line began operating in the fourth quarter of 2003.

Schweitzer-Mauduit acquired P.T. Kimsari Paper Indonesia (now P.T. PDM Indonesia), located in Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia. P.T. PDM Indonesia began operations as a cigarette paper producer in 1986 and is the largest independent tobacco-related papers producer in Indonesia.

Schweitzer-Mauduit acquired the tobacco-related paper manufacturing assets of KCPI, a Philippines company. The tobacco-related manufacturing assets were acquired by PDM Philippines Industries, Inc., a wholly-owned indirect subsidiary of Schweitzer-Mauduit, and are located in San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines. KCPI had engaged in the manufacturing of tobacco-related paper products for the Philippine cigarette industry since 1967 and the mill is the only domestic producer of tobacco-related papers.
Schweitzer-Mauduit and China National Tobacco Corporation, the principal operating company under China’s State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, agreed to form a 50/50 joint venture to produced cigarette and porous plug wrap papers in China. The joint venture would build a new state-of–the-art paper mill, with two paper machines having a total annual production capacity of 18,000 metric tons. The new mill will be located near Jiangmen, Guangdong province, with construction expected to take approximately two years. Project spending, including capital expenditures and working capital requirements, is expected to total approximately $100 million.
